Thanksgiving hostess gifts: a cozy mug, candle and meal planner on a harvest table

Somebody is roasting a turkey for you this year. They have been planning the menu for weeks, they will be up before sunrise, and they will still be washing the gravy boat after everyone has gone home. The least we can do is show up with something nicer than a grocery-store bouquet grabbed on the way over.

The good news: the best Thanksgiving hostess gifts are small. Your host does not need a project, a centerpiece that clashes with their table, or a dish that has to go in the oven at 4 p.m. They need something easy to receive, nice to look at, and useful after the leftovers are gone. Every pick below is under $30, and most are well under $25.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, so there is still plenty of time to order online. Made-to-order items (like the mug, towel and tote from our shop) take a little longer, so order those a couple of weeks ahead.

Quick picks

How much should you spend?

For most Thanksgiving dinners, $15 to $30 is the sweet spot. It is enough to feel thoughtful without making the host feel they owe you something back. If you are also bringing a side dish or dessert, a smaller token (a chocolate bar, a jar of good salt) is plenty. If it is your first time at their table, or they are hosting a big crowd, lean toward the top of that range.

For the table tonight

These are things the host can set out that same evening, or tuck away for the next gathering.

1

P.F. Candle Co. Spiced Pumpkin Standard Candle

$24 at P.F. Candle Co.

Toasted nutmeg, pumpkin butter and brown sugar: it smells like the pie cooling on the counter. It is a limited-edition fall scent from P.F. Candle Co., and the simple amber jar looks good in any kitchen. Hand it over unlit so the host can decide whether to burn it tonight or save it for a quiet Friday.

Rifle Paper Co. Tea Towel – Harvest

$22 at Rifle Paper Co.

A pretty tea towel is the classic hostess gift for a reason: it never clashes, it always gets used, and it wraps itself. This one has an autumn harvest print from Rifle Paper Co. If your host leans more farmhouse, the Harvest Gingham version with rickrack trim is the same price.

Jacobsen Salt Co. Ceramic Arch Salt Cellar

$25 at Jacobsen Salt Co.

A handmade salt cellar from Portland’s Pigeon Toe Ceramics, made in collaboration with Jacobsen Salt Co. It is small (about 2.9 by 2.5 inches), sits beside the stove for years, and makes everyday cooking feel a little fancy. When we checked, the Cool Gray and Canyon colors were in stock.

Hostess gift etiquette, in three lines

  1. Give it at the door, and say it is for them to enjoy later, so they do not feel pressure to open or serve it.
  2. Skip anything that needs work, like flowers without a vase or food that needs oven space.
  3. Add a note. A short handwritten thank-you is the part they will remember.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you spend on a Thanksgiving hostess gift?

Most guests spend $15 to $30. If you are already bringing a dish, $10 to $15 is plenty. For a first visit or a big family dinner, aim closer to $30.

Do you need to bring a gift to Thanksgiving dinner?

It is not required, but it is a kind gesture, especially if you are not bringing a dish. A small, easy-to-receive gift and a sincere thank-you go a long way.

Is wine a good hostess gift?

Wine is always welcome if you know your host drinks, but say it is for later so they do not feel they need to open it. If you are not sure, a non-alcoholic pick like a candle, chocolate or a tea towel is a safe bet.

What should you bring to a Friendsgiving host?

Keep it fun and practical: a card game for after dinner, a jar of flaky salt, or reusable food wraps for leftovers. Friendsgiving hosts often do a lot of cleanup, so anything that helps the morning after is appreciated.

Should the host open the gift in front of guests?

No, and you should not expect them to. Hand it over at the door with a quick “this is for you, for later,” and let them enjoy it after the busy day is done.
